N.B. This is not investment advice 🙂
My name is Alex Orlov, «Tetics Management School». I usually «take the floor» when we want to reach out about something easy to understand, but at the same time improperly to discuss, for example, money.
Every day without even thinking about it, you and I make several investment decisions. We weigh up to what extent an activity we do now or DO NOT do, will impact our lives in the future. These are very important investment decisions that affect our growth, the tasks in question, freedom of choice, and the income on which we depend.
We all understand numbers, so making some simple calculations can help us to make the right decisions. In this way, we will have mathematical evidence that enrolling in the Team Course is one of the best investments for our future.
We need to make some basic assumptions to produce an accurate calculation. Let’s say that your salary is your main income. Let’s also say that having the skills required to work with a team or manage a project gives you the chance to increase your salary and, accordingly, your basic income.
I can make this sweeping generalization because I do not see any reasonable arguments that would support a reduction in the salary of an employee who knows how to work with a team or lead projects.
If you also assume that having a certain set of skills guarantees a salary increase, not by a factor of 2 or 3, but by 10-20%, then you will understand that sooner or later, you will find yourself in a company where this skill-set is required, and for which you will be paid for supplying. The question is how many months are required before you’ll see a return on this investment. What is the ROI?
Let’s say your salary is 150,000 rubles / 60,000 hryvnia / 2,000+ dollars. Try to estimate, without using a calculator, the return on investment over a 1 year period, based on the assumption that you buy a course and your salary then increases by 10 or 20%.
Have you got that? Make a note of your amount.
We made this easy-to-use calculation tool to help you.
Calculator – google spreadsheet.
Just make a copy for yourself and enter the salary amount in USD or EUR.
These numbers show the payback on a course for a team lead or project manager over a period of up to 1 year. The 200% + return on this investment is real and achievable in less than 1 calendar year, and it assumes an increment of only 10% on the basic salary amount.
Even if you don’t immediately receive a salary increment of 10% (and, it would be more realistic to assume an increase of 20 – 40%), but have to wait until a year later, the investment will still start working for you and give you a return equivalent to the invested amount within 6-9 months. Or much sooner.
Here’s a question. How many more years are you planning to work? 10-20 years? Make a simple Excel graph. Quantify your basic income with math. See how clear and simple the arguments are for making this investment, goddammit! 🙂
A few days ago, I wrote about the team leaders’ walk on the sociological tightrope — if you don’t have time to read it, please take 5-6 minutes to follow my logic. (BTW, these numbers are not just an attempt to persuade you to take on an additional pile of work as a team lead or PM :))
For 10 years, we have been training managers how to lead a team or project without falling into the trap of trying to handle everything themselves. We work on how to restore people’s responsibility for their decisions, how to work with those who want to work, and take pleasure in doing their work to the best of their ability.
If you still remember our conversation about numbers, we are talking about an investment that will return 20-90 times the original expenditure over a 10 year period. The magic of large numbers, I agree, but 10 years is a fairly long-term commitment, right?
We didn’t include these numbers in our subject line because we didn’t want you to skip this message 🙂
