Let’s digress from tasks, priorities and project management frameworks for a couple of minutes. A team lead or manager is, first of all, a human being. With his own strengths and with his own behavior and thinking.
Suppose in childhood, parents would often say that the main thing is to be a good person, not to let others down, to help everyone, and only then can a human call himself a person.
Please note, there is nothing wrong in the very message of helping people and being a good person, of course. But this model of behavior works in conditions where, in response, colleagues or manager do not start using the person shamelessly, the person does not start to overwork for the whole team and does not bring himself to burnout as a result, at the moment when he realizes that he is dragging everything for everyone without any light at the end of the tunnel.
What, for example, is the use of training the skills of setting and controlling tasks to a manager who cannot get the result from the person to whom this task was assigned? Yes, now he knows five types of control, and not one. But at the moment when the subordinate has to give the result at the point of control, instead of the result, the manager hears a story of how the subordinate was giving effort. The manager sighs, goes away and does this task himself, thereby fixing the model in the performer’s head: “You can tell how hard it is for you to live and not do some tasks that are difficult or that you just don’t like”.
In other words, knowledge of certain techniques and methods in itself can work if the person who uses them works with a computer system that does not whine in response, and may not work if the manager receives in response a reaction that contradicts his life beliefs.
A deadbeat manager or team lead begins to dislike his job. The results do not improve, or even get worse. The Manager or the Customer sighs and sends the Team Lead to another two-day training on agile development methodologies. Is it possible to change in two days a model of behavior that has been developed over the years? Probably not. Will the story of a “self-organizing team” work in an ordinary team of normal, living, somewhat tired people under the leadership of a team lead or a manager, who was inspired by parents, school, institute with the idea of “die yourself, but help your friend out”?
That’s an unpleasant question, we agree.
What can you do to get rid of non-working and interfering behaviors?
Psychologists say that new neural connections emerge through learning and are reinforced through repeated use. You and I need to learn something, discuss it with someone, try to apply it and several times consciously recognize a situation in which new behavior will work better than the previous one. This is how we fix all phases of the reaction: situation, analysis, choice of model, action. So we start to act differently. But if teaching a skill does not include any of the phases, the student acts as he did before the training and nothing changes: the result will be the same.
